The Basics of Corrugated Packaging

  The basic elements of corrugated packaging are flutes, corrugations, and flat lines. These materials are durable and flexible. This type of packaging is made of multiple layers of heavy paper. The size and shape of the flutes determine the thickness of the box walls and their stacking strength. The largest flute, the "A" flute, is about five millimeters thick. This is ideal for products that need extra cushioning and stacking strength. The first element of corrugated packaging is the flute. Each of the flutes is positioned in an arched pattern. The middle layer is made of two layers stacked one above the other. The arches on the outer layers are arranged in waves. The corrugated cardboard has R fluting instead of B fluting. The R fluting is thinner than B fluting and takes up less space in storage. A corrugated fiber box has linerboards on the inner and outer facings.
